Here we are in July 2017, and we have made it to the half-way mark of the Major League Baseball season, which can only mean, the All-Star Game. Looking back and knowing the influence baseball had on me my entire life, from little league to college, from participant to spectator, it’s truly been America’s pastime, and mine as well. Some of my fondest memories growing up were on the baseball diamond. Spring, summer, fall, and winter…it didn’t matter. I was there, and my parents made sure of it.
Having had the opportunity to meet so many of my baseball heroes over time, before and after my career ended, I looked for what made them different? What traits do they have? For me, and not to borrow a movie title, it was truly “For Love of the Game.” To play the game with passion, intensity, teamwork, but mainly for fun, was what I was driven to do. When it was no longer fun, I laid my catcher’s gear down and walked away from the game I loved and with the lessons I learned.
So as we watch the 2017 All-Star Game, I ask you, what makes these players special to you? Who has and/or currently stands out? What leadership/followership qualities do you observe? We can learn a great deal from sports that we can apply to our personal and professional lives. I’d love to hear from you.
